The planning system should encourage housebuilding in the North and Midlands, not stymie development

Conversations about the UK’s regional imbalances have gained further momentum of late, triggered in part by the key role that northern voters played in the Conservative Party’s recent electoral success.

Lack of infrastructure investment in regions outside London has long been a talking point. But with the government now reliant on these areas for votes, resolving this ever-present national divide has gained a new urgency, and now a pledge to “level up” the UK’s regional economies – a task that appears to fall to minister Simon Clarke.
