With negotiations on a housebuilder pledge to pay for fire safety repairs close to finalising, Joey Gardiner looks at what the likely shape of the deal says about how far the housing secretary has been able to get his way on cladding

All the signs are that a deal between the government and the housebuilding industry over the cladding crisis is due to be reached in the next few days. Sources on both sides of the negotiations – which centre on how to fund repairs to mid- and high-rise blocks now deemed to pose fire risks – say talks are entering the final stages.
